One of newlyborn boys has been named Sailab Khan by his parents after the ravaging floods. He was born some eight days ago on a boat when his family was being rescued in the Katcha area of Bugri, Nausherferoz district.

Now a resident at a relief camp established at the Gul Hasan Lashari Memorial Educational Complex, Gizri, this tiny baby not only grabs the attention of residents but of newcomers as well.

"We are happy that we have two newborn babies in the camp. In these traumatising times, where people are miserable and sad, the birth of children not only brings joy to the families but also to the people who are living here since we are like family now," Khannum Bibi, a flood victim said.

The mother of Sailab Khan, Irshadm while cuddling the underweight baby who happens to be her seventh child, said, "Despite the fact that we don't have anything to call of our own now and have lost everything, we feel very blessed that god has given me this little bundle of joy."

An aunt of the baby boy, who lost her 13yearold son while she was helping Irshad with the delivery, says that it is because of Sailab Khan that she is surviving the trauma. "The little one has given me something to be cheerful about," she said.

Meanwhile, in another room, a woman Kausar was applying Surma to the eyes of another newborn baby of the camp, Aquib Ali. Hailing from Jaffarabad, Balochistan, the young one was born in a train when the family was shifting to a safer place.

"When our house was flooded, we had to leave immediately without our belongings, I was very worried. My pains had started and there was no Dai on the train. I thought it would be hard for me and my child to survive the delivery period, but thanks to Allah everything went fine," she said.

Kausar had previously delivered her two children at home as she was not allowed to go to a hospital by her family. However, she says that she was a bit sad that she had no privacy while delivering her third child. She however is thankful that she and her baby are both healthy.

A female doctor present at a medical camp at the school told The News there are more than 20 pregnant women in the relief camp whereas the number of children is around 390 children. She said that the pregnant women are being counseled while the new mothers are being provided treatment, special food and medicines as well as diapers for the children.

However, Irshad seemed unhappy with the medical arrangements at the camp. "I had lost a lot of blood during my delivery and I am extremely weak now. However, I was not looked after properly here and nor was my baby," she lamented.

My youngest (second child) is now 14 months and I have to chase him down to change him but generally its every 3 hrs or sooner if hes wet or dirty, always before and after naptimes and before bedtime, and most nights if he wakes up I change him too. Generally speaking newborns go through 810 diapers per day.

I use mostly cloth diapers so I have to change every 11 1/2 hours. However, the number of disposables used really depends on the baby. Some days, when the baby poos alot, it seems like all I do is change diapers. I would say the average is about 1012
